Boris Bivona ~  Director/Choreographeer

Boris was born in Palermo, where he started dancing at the age of 10. During his first visit to Australia in 1989 he was accepted to the third and last year of the Australian Ballet School, Melbourne.

His professional career started in Bordeaux upon being invited by Paolo Bortoluzzi artistic director of the company at the time. In 1992 he was invited as a soloist by London City Ballet where he danced a vast repertoire ranging from Petipa classics to Ashton and Balanchine. Seeking new experiences he then spent several years working as resident dancer as well as guest in numerous theatres and dance companies such as: Wiener Ballet Theater; Narodni Divadlo Brno, Czech Republic; Landestheater Salzburg, Austria; European Ballet, London; Theater Vorpommern Greiswald-Stralsund, Germany. Boris returns to Italy at the end of the nineties to work in co-operation with different State Theatres as well as private companies such as: L’Ensemble of Micha Van Hoecke, The Arena in Verona and the Teatro G. Verdi in Trieste.

During his career has performed in prestigious theatres such as Sadler’s Wells in London, the Arena in Verona and the Teatro Nacional Teresa Carreno in Caracas; Boris has toured extensively through USA, Canada, Carribean and South America and has danced in numerous theatres in Europe and the UK. Moving to Australia in 2000 Boris has co-operated with Queensland Ballet and Queensland Arts Council (QAC) for the production and staging of an education program that has successfully toured in schools throughout Queensland. Boris has also co-produced and staged original works for Woodford Folk Festival and has presented seminars for teachers and cultural operators in universities (QUT) as well as State and private schools.

Since 2002 Boris has been the artistic Director of Ballet Theatre of Queensland (BTQ) the State Youth Dance Company in QLD with which he has already staged four new productions at the Playhouse (QPAC) in Brisbane including Pinocchio in 2006. In addition to theatre and arts Boris has a passion for environmental conservation; he has attended anthropology and environmental study courses at University of Queensland (UQ) and he has recently successfully completed a ten day solo trekking in the Australian Alps (NSW).

Cav. Stephen J. Pellegrino, in conjunction with the Consulate of Italy in Brisbane, is offering also for the year 2010 a scholarship to Australian citizens and Italian citizens permanently residing in Queensland. As commonly known, from 2007 the scholarship privileges Italian and Australian musicians and takes place within the Italian Week, the official celebration of the Italian National Day.
